Green Shield Stamps
Why did they ever do away with these? Spoiled for choice in the Green Shield Stamp shops. Still got some in the back of the drawer, will be worth something one day, mark my words.

Re the Green Shield/Argos link.

I remember standing in East Ham High Street by Argos and saying, I remember when all this was green shields.

No-one laughed.

Yes, a bit moorish weren't they.

Remember certain petrol stations gave away quadrupled stamps and sticking loads of the buggers in the books.

Re: Green Shield Stamps
Always got them at the Co-Op down on the Woolwich Rd. I’m talking about the stamps not the paedos.

Re: Green Shield Stamps
Each stamp had a nominal face-value of one thirtieth of a penny, so maybe you could claim that back from Argos.

Re: Green Shield Stamps
Didn't even know there were Green Shield shops, let alone that they became Argos, so am guessing it was quite a long time ago.

Guessing Luncheon Vouchers are also extinct?

Old man used to be given these when he worked for Standard Chartered Bank before his retirement 30 years ago.

Re: Green Shield Stamps
Did you ever take these records into the store? Did they gently explain that the stamps had to be stuck in albums to be redeemed?

Re: Green Shield Stamps
For some reason some of my old 45 rpm records have these stamps stuck to them.

Re: Green Shield Stamps
I didn't know about Argos.

I associate Green Shield stamps with going to Tesco in Pimlico when I first arrived in the UK as a kid. They still had clunky cash registers that always ran out of till roll when we got to the front. I fancy a Tom's Yankee bar now.

I used to have a little booklet....the old man would bribe the dolly bird at the counter at the garage opposite the civic centre on the barking road....can't remember the company but it was a horse with wings for the logo?

Anyway I had shitload of stamps but could never afford anything.

My god this is dull ! Who didn’t know that Green Shield became Argos - East Ham store one of the last ones which springs to mind. Next people won’t know that Iceland was once Bejam !

Memories not what it was so had a butchers on wiki and found this.

In a 1979 episode of British sitcom Fawlty Towers, an American tourist sarcastically asks Basil Fawlty, "What do you get for living in a climate like this? Green Stamps?"

Re: Green Shield Stamps
Christ this takes me back. The green ones and also the big blue ones. Double bubble. As long as you could run faster than the paedos, the 70s were a great time to be a kid.
